Yale Library Manuscript and Archives Collections Cataloging Guidelines

Yale Library Manuscript and Archives Collections Cataloging Guidelines

This manual was migrated from Drupal to Confluence in 2024. It will be updated to reflect Yale Library’s adoption of ALMA as our ILS in mid-2025.

This manual is maintained by Special Collections Technical Services with guidance from the Archives Advisory Group. Please direct comments to Mary Caldera , Associate Director for Archival Description and co-chair of the Archives Advisory Group.

This manual provides information on the creation and maintenance of catalog records for manuscript and archives collections using record type p (mixed materials). Specific procedures for inputting and editing records conform to national standards (such as DACS, LCAF, and LCSH) and Yale's general cataloging policies. Instructions in the main text address cataloging of manuscript and archives collections with finding aids, and most are also applicable to other types of manuscript cataloging. Each section includes links to the Beinecke Library's supplemental guidelines, where applicable. Criteria for cataloging manuscripts individually or as a collection, with or without a finding aid, are locally determined.
