Music Cataloging at Yale was created in 1996 by Michelle (Mickey) Koth, Catalog Librarian at the Irving S. Gilmore Music Library at Yale University. She maintained and updated the site herself until 2025, and it is now collaboratively maintained by David Floyd, Music Librarian for Metadata and Acquisitions.

In 2015, the site was converted from its original HTML to Drupal. From August 2024-June 2026, the site was migrated to Confluence by David Floyd and Mickey Koth.

About Music Cataloging at Yale “3.0”

In addition to the aesthetic changes from the Drupal version of Music Cataloging at Yale to the Confluence version, several organizational and content changes are also worth taking note of.

Aesthetic Changes

Page organization

In general, textual information on pages in MC@Y 3.0 is organized using headings, rather than tables, which facilitates the inclusion of new floating tables of contents in the upper right corner labeled “ON THIS PAGE” (example), and is generally more accessible for screen readers. There is also less reliance on images. With this restructuring of the text, many of the navigational page anchor links are no longer necessary. Our hope is that the floating tables of contents will provide a satisfactory alternative means of navigation within a page.

Tables

Most of the content that still needs to be represented in a table with now include a header row that travels as you scroll down, like a frozen top row in a spreadsheet. Header rows are colored light green.

MARC21 examples

Previously, the double-dagger character (‡) has been used for MARC21 examples as a subfield delimiter. Now, we are using the more generally applicable single dollar sign ($).

Content Changes

The Drupal version of MC@Y includes guidance on the application of RDA, MARC21, MLA Best Practices, Voyager ILS, OCLC Connexion, and local workflows for Gilmore Music Library Technical Services. In this new iteration, references to Voyager ILS have been removed due to our system migration to Alma and adoption of OCLC products as our primary venue for original cataloging, rather than within our ILS. Local workflows have also been harmonized with other documentation in Yale Library Metadata to better align practices across the institution.

Over the course of the past two years, almost¹ every page in Music Cataloging at Yale has undergone review for accuracy, recency, and relevance. You may notice that some pages appear exactly as they had in Drupal, while other pages are quite different, or have been removed. There are also several expanded pages, such as Cataloging 78 RPM recordings.
