Reproduction: "An exact copy of the content of a resource made by mechanical or electronic means." [RDA Glossary]

"The word “reproduction” is being used in its broadest sense to include all resources formerly identified as reproductions, republications, reprints, reissues, facsimiles, etc., that still represent equivalent content between an original resource and a reproduction of that original. Revised editions represent different expressions and are not treated as reproductions." [LC-PCC PS for 27.1]

Here are collected instructions for cataloging tangible print resources: facsimile reprints (monograph and serial), photocopies, and microform. The instructions are based on RDA and, the LC-PCC PSs for 1.11, 27.1, and 28.1. Guidelines for cataloging remote access reproductions (online resources) are covered by the PCC Provider-Neutral E-Resource MARC Record Guidelines (PN). PN instructions do not apply to direct access electronic resources. Detailed instructions for direct access electronic resources are not given, but would follow the same principles applied to tangible print resources.

Under RDA, cataloging tangible resources as reproductions introduces linking fields 775/776. We will not make reciprocal linking fields in the records for the original resource if these exist in Alma or OCLC, whether the reproduction is a facsimile, reprint, or microfilm. However, if there are linking fields in records for print resources, do not delete them.

Facsimile/Print Reproductions

Facsimile: "An illustrative content consisting of an exact copy of an original, usually in the same dimensions as the original, especially of books, documents, prints, and drawings."--RDA Glossary.

Reproduction: “An exact copy of the content of a manifestation or item made by mechanical or electronic means.”--RDA Glossary.

A book whose content is republished in 2014 by publisher B exactly as it was published in 1910 by publisher A but whose physical appearance differ from the original publication (dimension, for instance) is a reproduction.

A reproduction by a different publisher requires a new bibliographic record. A reproduction by the same publisher would not require a new record for the reproduction.

If the content of a book has been revised, it is not a reproduction, but a new edition, and a new record would be made.

RDA 1.11. Facsimiles and Reproductions. "When describing a facsimile or reproduction, record the data relating to the facsimile or reproduction in the appropriate element. Record any data relating to the original manifestation as an element of a related work or related manifestation, as applicable." In practice, this means use MARC 775 not 533.

RDA 3.1.3. Facsimiles and Reproductions. "When describing a facsimile or reproduction, record the elements describing the carrier of the facsimile or reproduction."

Fixed Fields: Apply to the resource in hand. For Type of Date use "r" with Date 1 as the date of publication of the reproduction and Date 2 as the date of publication or production of the original. 

Photocopies and Print On Demand Reproductions

Photocopies: "print reproductions that are typically printed using xerographic techniques and for which the source is a physical document."--LC-PCC PS for 1.11

Print on Demand (POD) Reproductions: ​"print reproductions that are not printed until an order is received, are printed using digital techniques, and for which the source is a digital document such as a PDF file."--LC-PCC PS for 1.11 Print reproductions of digitized copies of books owned by the Yale Library produced by Etherington Conservation Services at the request of the Preservation Department are examples of POD reproductions.

Provider-neutral approach:

• Follow the provider neutral approach described in the LC-PCC PS for 1.11 when cataloging photocopies and POD reproductions. But do not use this approach for photocopies or POD reproductions of book chapters or journal articles. In case of doubt, do not use the provider-neutral approach.

• Clone the record from the record for the original resource

Leader

• ​Record the cataloging form associated with the record for the original resource:

  • i (ISBD) for a record derived from an RDA record 

  • a for a record derived from an AACR2 record, etc.

008: Fixed-Length Data Elements

• Publication date: Record the publication status associated with the original resource

• Date 1: Record date associated with the original resource

• Date 2: Record date associated with the original resource; this field will be blank for resources coded as "s" in Publication Status

• Place of publication: Record place associated with the original resource

• Form of item: Record “r” for regular print reproduction.

• Cataloging source: Keep the original code.

Variable fields

• Record all manifestation elements (title, statement of responsibility, publication statement, extent, etc.) of the original resource and add/modify the following fields:

• 040: add $e pn after $b

• 020: change $a ISBN of the original resource to $z

• 037: Source of acquisition: record the commercial provider if there is one

• 050: Photocopy: Use the original date of publication followed by lower-case "a" (In MFHD, the local practice is to use capital "A") [re-tag from 050 00 if needed]

• 336: Record content type regardless of cataloging rules followed

• 337: Record media type regardless of cataloging rules followed

• 338: Record carrier type regardless of cataloging rules followed

• 533: Record $a Print reproduction.

• 775 08:

  • For photocopy, optionally record: $i Reproduction of (manifestation):  $a Author. $t Title $d Publication statement $h Extent statement $w (OCoLC) number if easily available

  • For POD reproduction, optionally record: POD reproduction (optional):
